    • Obituary November 1, 1989 "St. Maries Gazette Record" St. Maries, Idaho Funeral services for Edith M. Bates, 95, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Foster will officiate. Mrs. Bates died October 30 in St. Maries. She was born on November 16, 1893 to Harmon and Fanny (Smith) Littrell in Berryville, Arkansas. When she was nine years old, she moved to Alva, Oklahoma to live with her older sister, Liz Holland. She married Alexander Roller on November 10, 1910 in Alva. She was a housewife and ran a cleaning shop. Mr. Roller died in 1919. She married Clarence Bates on August 25, 1922 in Alva. They moved to Harrison Flats on June 14, 1943. Mrs. Bates was a housewife and worked with her husband on the family farm. Mr. Bates died in 1960. Mrs. Bates had lived in St. Maries since 1974. She was happiest when she could get all of her family and neighbors together and cook for them. She was a charter member of Indian Springs Community Club. She is survived by her sons, Dean Bates of Harrison Flats and Emerson Roller of Grants Pass, Oregon; her daughter, Irene Patton of Elgin, Oregon; a step-son, Lee Bates of Post Falls; nine grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two step-sons, Calvin Bates and Leland Bates. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
