Confederate Soldier - fell at the battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On
December 30, 1862, Major General William S. Rosecrans' Army of the Cumberland
and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under the command of Major General
Braxton Bragg faced each other at Stones River near the town of Murfreesboro,
in north central Tennessee. Each commander intended to attack the other, and
each planned to strike the opposing right flank. As dawn broke on December 31,
Bragg hit hard. At first Rosecrans did not realize the force of the blow and
continued with his own plans. He soon saw the necessity of shifting forces to
bolster his own lines instead of taking the offensive. Bragg threw one
division after another against the Union lines. Sheridan, holding a narrow
front, put up a stubborn resistance although he was forced to pull back.

The savage fighting lasted all day with Rosecrans showing the highest qualities
of generalship, continually strengthening and reforming his lines. With the
early winter twilight the action tapered off. At the close of the day Bragg
sent an exultant dispatch to Richmond. "The enemy has yielded his strong
point and is falling back. We occupy the whole field and shall follow . . .
God has granted us a happy new year."

On January 1, 1863, Bragg realized that the Union forces were going to stand
and fight. He also learned the extent of his losses the day before. With both
antagonists wary, the first day of 1863 passed in quiet.

On January 2, 1863 Bragg ordered Breckenridge to strike the Union line with his
full force. For a short time it looked as if he would break it, but reserves
changed the tide of battle and inflicted heavy punishment upon the attackers.

On January 3, Bragg quietly withdrew his army. Because roads were impassable
due to heavy rain, Rosecrans decided against pursuit.
