  • Notes
    • James Cantrell, Jr. was born in 1823 in Warren County, TN. He married Lucinda Taylor, ca 1840 in DeKalb County, TN. She was born in 1825 in TN. and was a sister to Lavina who married his brother Tilman. In 1840, the census of his brother, Tilman included a 15-20 yr. old male and an 15-20 yr. old female. This was probably James and Lucinda. When the Mexican war started, he joined with his brothers, Benjamin, Tilman, William, and Jasper and their brother-in-law John R. Louney in Capt. Abraham M. Savage's Co. "F" Third Regmt. TN Vol. Inf., Col .B.F. Cheatman in Command. This company was mustered into service Oct. 8, 1847. They rendevoused on the Nolenville Pike, two and one half miles from Nashville. They were taken to New Orleans by boat, it preceeded to Vera Cruz. Here the brigade was formed, but it did not reach the town of Mexico City before it was captured. It has been said that in this war, nine men died from disease to one who was killed in action. Some who returned, died soon thereafter from the diseases picked up in Mexico. James and Lucinda were not located in the 1850 Census of either DeKalb or Warren County TN. In 1860, he was farming in the 5th Civ. Dist. and his real estate was valued at $400.00 and his personal property at $200.00. Ten children were at home. The household also included his widowed mother, Keziah Cantrell age 43. In 1870, James and his family were again recorded in the 5th Civ. Dist. and his real estate was valued at $300.00 and his personal property at$400.00. Three more children and been born in the past ten years and eight children were home. In 1880, the family was again reported in Blue Springs TWP., 5th Civ. Dist. DeKalb County. The household included a widowed daughter and five of her children and three single sons. In the 1880s, James sold out in TN, and they moved westward to northern Texas, and here Lucinda died in 1890 in Gainessville, Cooke County, TX and James died in 1891.

Martha is living in household of parents, James and Lucinda Taylor Cantrell. She is listed as Martha Cantrell, married, age 33. Five children -- Cleve D., Ada G., Tennessee, Ezekiel, and Malinda Cantrell -- are also listed in the household as grandchildren. I am assuming they are Martha's children. Do not know who her husband is or why she is living at home.
