  • Notes
    • "James Cantrell was born in 1789 in the 96th Dist. S.C. later Spartenburg County. He accompanied his parents on the move to Warren County, TN. ca 1806. Here he married Keziah "Kizzie" Cantrell ca 1809. She was born in 1787 in Rockingham County, NC and was a daughter of John and Sarah Cantrell and 1st cousin. John and Sarah had moved their family to TN in the same caravan as Benjamin.
When Andrew Jackson called for Volunteers for a force of 3000 troops to quell the Seminole Indians, who had risen against the settlers of Florida in the First Seminole Wars (1816-1818) James joined up. He lost a finger in this action. His sons were to follow his footsteps in laters wars.
James and Kizzie were members of the old Bildad Baptist Church and their names appear on the rolls of the chruch 1812-1816. James was included on the tax list of Warren County, in 1812. In 1820, James and his family were recorded in Warren County and seven children were listed. He had two surveys of land in Warren County in the area that became later DeKalb County. The first in 1825 was for 100 acres and the second in 1827 was for 50 acres. in 1830, the family was not located as seperate household, but we believe was recorded in the household of his father, Benjamin Cantrell in Warren County. In 1840, the family was recorded in the 5th Civ. Dist. of the new county of DeKalb. Five children were at home. On the 6th of Nov. 1848, he was appointed the administrator of the estate of his father's 3rd wife and widow Hannah Cantrell. In 1850, James and Kizzie were recorded in the 5th Civ. Dist. and their household included a 16 year old girl named Martha Cantrell and she was attending school. This could have been their daughter, Martha whose husband died in the Mexican War and who had remarried and lived near by. No record has been found for a marriage of a Martha Cantrell in the next ten years who has not been identified. Her identity has not been established. Their son, Abel lived on an adjoining farm. James died ca. Feb. 1859, and the son Benjamin was appointed administrator of his estate. In 1860, Kizzie age 73 was recorded in the home of son James, Jr. in the 5th Civ. Dist. She was not located in 1870. The family genealogist in the early 1900s received a list of the children of James. There were names of nine children. Census reports indicate there were at least twelve children. We have located the records of eight and possibly nine children.
