    • CENSUS: !1860 Federal Census 1790-1890 North Carolina Census Index -- Ancestry.com
Lists D.C. Strutton Webster P.O., Jackson Co., NC P 647

Following information provided by Wm Helms:

Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System/National Park Service index lists D.C. or Daniel C. Stratton as Sergeant in Company F, 29th NC Reg.

From a history of the Regiment, Vol. VIII is a roster of NC Troops published by the Division of Archives and History of NC. Listed on the roster of Company F is:

      Stratton, Daniel C., Sergeant
Resided in Jackson County and enlisted at age 19 on Aug. 31, 1861. Mustered in as a Private. Promoted to Sergeant on an unspecified date. Hospitalized at Meridian, Mississippi, Jan 16, 1865 with an unspecified wound. Place and date wounded not reported. Surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, May 4, 1865. Paroled at Meridian (Alabama) on May 9, 1865. [«i»Note: Can't be David C. Stratton who married Emily Abercrombie. They were married in GA Feb 1865. SD 22 Jun 2007«/i»]

      Following entry is:
      Stratton, Joseph, Private
Resided in Jackson County and enlisted at age 49, Dec. 1861. Discharged on November 8, 1862 by reason of being overage.

      W. H. Strutton states on his Marriage Bond in 1886 that his mother, Christina, is living in Alabama. It was speculated that she was living with her son, D.C. (David or Daniel?). However, the census records cause a problem. The D.C. Stratton in Alabama in 1870 had moved to Texas by 1880.

There is a D.C. Stratton listed on the 1870 census, Tappaloosa Co., AL, age 27, born NC, wife Sarah, age 27, three sons, James, Joe and George.

Same family listed on 1880 census, Bastrop Co., TX, D.C. Stratton, age 38, born NC, wife Emily (Sarah?). Several children including Joseph and George. James is not listed but the ages of Joe and George match the 1870 census.

Following info provided by: Tressie (Stratton) Schmitt:

Her great-grandfather, David C. Strutton, was born in NC about 1840. Later moved to Alabama where he met and married Sarah Emily Abercrombie. They had at least 8 children.

Marriage recorded in "Columbus, Georgia, From its Selection as a 'Trading Town' in 1857 to its Partial Destruction by Wilson's Raid in 1865." compiled by John H. Martin; publ Thos. Gilbert, Book Printer and Binder. Columbus Georgia 1874. p 177
