A lot of people remember when moving meant stuffing all their worldly possessions into their cars, but few are left who remember when moving meant packing everything into a covered wagon. Merril Strutton was among them. "He was probably one of the last guys alive. . . . He and his family actually moved from Hawkeye, Missouri, to Kellyville, Oklahoma, by covered wagon," his son, Rocky Mountain News publisher Larry Strutton, said Friday.
"It was during the Depression and dust bowl days," he said. "Those were hard times, and they were looking for a place to survive." Merril Strutton died Thursday at age 89.
Born Aug. 8, 1911, in Missouri, he died at a Colorado Springs hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Strutton had lived in Colorado Springs since 1935. He moved to the Springs the same year he married Gladys Shelton in Oklahoma. Mr. Strutton will be remembered at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swan-Law Funeral Directors in Colorado Springs, following a viewing on Monday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Swan-Law. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery will follow Tuesday's memorial service. Mr. Strutton worked in Colorado Springs as a house painter. He ran a small contracting firm - Strutton Painting and Decorating - and worked in recent years at the Air Force Academy. In addition to Larry Strutton, he is survived by two other sons, Kenneth Strutton of Colorado Springs and Floyd Strutton of Phoenix; and a daughter, Doris Jean Smith of Colorado Springs. He also is survived by three brothers, Burl Strutton and Earl Strutton, both of Colorado Springs, and Lloyd Strutton of Oregon; and by his sister, Wilma Ryun of Wichita, Kan.
