    • News Article/Obituary: Miller County Autogram-Sentinel, 1963

A 58-year-old Tuscumbia farmer was killed Sunday (Oct. 6, 1963) in a tractor accident as he worked on his farm west of Tuscumbia. The body of Aubrey W. Vaughan was found about 2 p.m. Monday after he failed to report for work that morning at the Pryor Novelty Co. in Tuscumbia where he was a machine operator.

Dr. L. Stanley Humphreys, Miller County coroner, said Vaughan's chest was crushed by the tractor. He estimated the accident occurred about noon Sunday. It was believed that Vaughan was gathering firewood Sunday morning. An empty wagon-which did not overturn-was hooked onto the tractor. The tractor apparently overturned on a sharp incline.

Fred Pryor, an owner of the Pryor Company, and two employees-Morris Patterson and Russell Burks-started searching for Vaughan after he failed to report Monday. They were joined in the search by Bill Anson and Ralph Wilkerson.

The men found Vaughn's body about 200 feet from the overturned tractor. Vaughan had apparently walked or crawled from the tractor and had crossed a low fence, apparently trying to reach the home of Anson, a neighbor. Vaughan's wife, Mrs. Artie Vaughan, is employed at Lake Ozark through the week and had not been at the farm since Sunday morning, it was reported.

A native of the Tuscumbia area, Mr. Vaughan was born March 11, 1905, to Wilson M. and Deska Lee Dobson Vaughan. He married the former Artie Shackleford. He had been employed with Pryors 17 years.

Also surviving are two sons, James Aubrey Vaughan and Robert L. Vaughan and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Louise Kelly, and Mrs. Lois Dean Duncan, all of Kansas City, Kan. Three brothers, Oval Vaughan of Eldon, Robert Vaughan of Tuscumbia, and Harold Vaughan of Versailles; three sisters, Mrs. Goldia McDowell and Mrs. Dean Musick, both of Tuscumbia, and Mrs. Pauline Hessefort of Warsaw; two half-brothers, Theron Vaughan and Floyd Vaughan, both of Eldon; a half-sister, Mrs. Tressie Boswell of Vinita, Okla., and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Flatwoods Baptist Church, with the Rev. Everett Cotton officiating. Burial was in the Scott Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon.

      Thanks N.T.
