  • Notes
    • This was told to Roy Littrell by his father John Thomas Littrell
Some of the first were Felin Littrell who came from Alabama when a young man and settled in the place now owned by Mr. J.M. Anderson in the year of 1851. John J. Littrell, he also being from Alabama, settled the place below Mr. Anderson on Piney owned by Mrs. Fields, in 1851.
Oledi Howard settled the place on Piney owned by Charley Myers in 1851 not knowing where he came from.
William Holman and his family came from Tennessee in a boat in 1845 and settled a place ar the mouth of Piney on Kings River owned by G.L. Doss now. Billie Southerland settled a place on Kings River in 1846 he being from Tennessee. B.C. Hawkins settled a place on Piney owned by Mr. Mills in 1850 being from Tennessee.
The first schoolhouse that was in this community was on Kings River in about 1867. First store was at Rockhouse owned by Mr. Pate. Huntsville was only a Post Office and store then.
These settlers lived in log cabins, had oxen for their teams and wooden plows. They hunted mostly for their living and beat out corn for their bread. The older people celebrated Christmas and Thanksgiving then.
Their sports were skating on ice, rope jumping and the old people would give a wood cutting and quilting. The men and their families would come for miles. The men cut wood, the women made quilts and gave a large feast or would have a corn husking and the women would weave cloth.
This was written by Donna Littrell using the same words and spelling that Roy Littrell used.
