      Descendants of Polly Luttrell Lawson often wonder why an 18-yr. old woman would marry a 60-yr. old man. Carter Lawson was said to have been a kind and gentle man; perhaps this is why.
      Polly, who was married four times, once told daughter Mary Belle late in life that she married "one man and three devils." The "man" she referred to was first husband Carter Lawson. (Randall Campbell, a descendant, quoting his grandmother Mary Belle Lawson Thompson.) She took back the name of her third husband, John Sawyer, in order to receive his Civil War pension. Despite the fact that she married twice after Carter Lawson's death, she was still familiarly known as "Polly Lawson" until the day she died. Her daughter Mary Belle Lawson Thompson purchased Polly's gravestone and, not knowing which married name she would've preferred on it, used her maiden name (Luttrell).
      She was a midwife and was well-versed in the use of herbs and other natural remedies as treatments for various illnesses, and saved many lives during the influenza epidemic arter WWI. She apparently saved the life of her great-grandson Frank Campbell when he was suffering from measles at about age 7. Says Randy, "In an area where doctors were few and expensive, and undertakers non-existent, her services were frequently used". Polly was also called on frequently to prepare and lay out the dead.
      Polly was renowned locally for her good cooking and the wonderful spreads she would put out at dinner time. When her son Anderson returned home after WWI, she prepared a huge meal and invited all the neighbors and relatives to come.
      Randy Campbell passed along a most interesting story about Polly which is widely circulated among descendants:
      "Polly was pregnant, and since she had just the two older boys, Joshua and Riley, I'm sure she was carrying my great-grandma [Mary Belle] at the time. Carter did not want Polly to go out in public while pregnant, but when his daughter, Winnie, who was older than Polly, came to stay with them for a while, she was pregnant too, but he had no problem with HER going where she pleased. On Sunday, Winnie told her father she wanted to go to church, but didn't have any shoes to wear. Shoes were found for Winnie, and she and Carter left for church. As soon as they were gone, Polly decided SHE would go to church too, and got the two boys ready. When she went to get her shoes, they were gone! Resolutely, she put Joshua and Riley on the horse and walked all the way to church barefoot, leading the horse. When she arrived the service was already underway. Taking the two little boys by the hand (they were about 3 and 1 or 2), she marched down the aisle to the front row and sat in full view of the pastor, where she let her bare filthy feet be fully and prominently displayed, sparing no effort to be sure they were seen by as many as possible. After the service someone said sharply, "Polly! Where are your shoes?" Her answer: "Winnie's got them!" Carter soon learned not to fool around with her, I would imagine. From what I've heard, she wouldn't put up with anyone's nonsense. Carter may have been old enough to be her grandfather, but she wouldn't be pushed around by him."
      She nursed stepson Alexander Lawson during his last illness, and attended his funeral (Alex Lawson's Civil War pension file).
      Erma Bernard Lawson, in a 1983 interview with Karen Hoskins, remembered Polly Luttrell Lawson as a "tiny little woman" who was a "great joker".
      She collapsed and was in a coma for about a day before she died. Her son Anderson took boards off of a hog pen to build her coffin. The neighbor women washed and dressed the body and laid it out on the bed. She was buried the day after she died, and apparently there was no death certificate filed. (Randy Campbell)

      ===================
      There is a problem with Polly's husbands. She definitely married first Carter Lawson; second to A. Hart Hughes -- marriage record says A. Hart Hughes to Polly Lawson and they had a daughter together who died in 1905; third to John C. Sawyer Aug 1896, marriage record says Polly G. Hughes to John Sawyer. Also in 1900 she is living with her brother Elza and on the census her name is Sawyers as married 3 years, 1897.

      The problem is with the 4th husband John Wesley Earles. I have not yet found 1910 census (6 Dec 2012), but on the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses Polly is widowed and living with her daughter, Tilda F. Lawson.

      Jno Earles, age 40, did marry Polly Luttrell, age 52, in Casey, KY on 12 May 1907. Marriage register states this is 3rd marriage for Jno Earles, age 40, and 4th marriage for Polly Luttrell, age 52.

      But according to Kentucky DC, John Wesley Earls, b 16 Oct 1867, died in Casey Co. 27 Jan 1950, widower. No spouse named. There is a John Earles, b 1868, living in Casey, KY on 1920 census with wife Malissa. In 1930 he is widowed living with brother-in-law of William R. Lynn and wife (John's sister) Josephine. 1940 he is living with niece, Minnie Baugh, widowed, in Casey, KY.

      This John Earles is the only one I could find in Casey Co. So were John and Polly divorced?
