Notes - George Mason Dallas Thornton was born 18 Oct 1845 in Browning, Schuyler County, Illinois to Albern J. Thornton and Nancy Moore. George had a light complection, red hair and blue eyes. He received an injury during the Civil War which caused Epilepsy and he would have seizures. On 11 Sep 1871, he married Polly Ann Luttrell (the daughter of William Lewis & Mahala Ann Luttrell). Nancy Ann Mahala Thornton, the only girl in the family, remembered they came to Camden County, Missouri when she was 9 years old. They traveled in a covered wagon.
To this union seven children were born (the 1900 census says 8) but only 5 lived to adulthood.
One day, Polly and the family came home and found George dead by the fireplace. This was at their home near Horse Shoe Bend in Glaze township, Branch Place, Camden County, Missouri. He was buried near Bagnell, Missouri the following day on 19 May 1886. George was only 40 years old.
Life was difficult for Polly - she had 3 boys under the age of 6 to care for. She traveled to Southwest Missouri to Tiff City, McDonald County, Missouri where she married John H. Luttrell (called "Old Blind John" by many) on 30 Sep 1889. John died sometime between Sep 1896\endash 1900 in Bridges, Ozark County, Missouri. Nancy hated her mother's 3rd husband but no one knows why. Polly and her children were back in Miller County, Missouri by 1900 and Nancy, who had 3 children by Andrew Irwin (but never married him), was living with her mother.
Polly had gone blind in her older age and use to scream from the pain because her eyes hurt her so bad. It was believed her sister went blind the same way. A letter from someone else stated that Polly was blind due to cataracts but Glaucoma does run in the family and seems more likely the culprit.
James Luttrell (Polly's first husband) was shot by George Washington Luttrell, Sr., Polly's brother, just one week into his marriage to Polly for abusing her so bad. James and Polly were supposedly related somehow (Marcella Moege thought first cousins) but no one knows how. I have yet to find the relationship. They buried James where no one would find him and told everyone that James deserted Polly two days after they were married. It was reported on George Thornton's Civil War Pension, that afterwards, several persons informed Polly that James Luttrell was dead.
This is confirmed in a letter from Marcella (Ash) Moege to Alma (Littrell) Wiles. "Polly was married 3 times, the first husband was her first cousin, and was shot when he walked out on the porch the first week of their marriage." Nobody knew who had shot him until 2011 when my mother remembered her father telling them the story and he indicated it was his father, George Washington Luttrell who had done the deed. Polly was only 18 at the time.
Polly died on 24 Jan 1912 in Hulsey, Washington County, Missouri of Pneumonia (although her death certificate lists Consumption). She was 63 years old. Her daughter, Nancy, remembered getting a letter edged in black indicating there was a death in the family. But she didn't have the money to go to her mother's funeral. Polly was buried the next day in Bryant Grove Cemetery (now known as New Hope Cemetery) not far from Pea Ridge, Washington County, Missouri.
