432 According to the archives in Washington, D.C. we find that Jacob V. Bailey, age 35 years, a farmer, with dark hair and blue eyes, enlisted in the Union Army in Brookfield Missouri, in August 1864. He was in Company A, 42nd Regiment of the Missouri Infantry (volunteers). He reported to his company in Macon County Missouri, in September 1864. On his service papers the record shows his death in a hospital in Tullahoma, Tenn. Feb. 11, 1865. A surgeon certified his death was due to dibility and diarrhea, contracted in the field. The following were his effects at time of death: Great coat, 1; Dress coat, 1; Trousers, 1 pair; Shirts, 3; Drawers, 2; Boots, 1pair; Cap, 1; Hankerchief, 1; Knapsack, 1; Canteen, 1; Money $11.80.

434 Birth year problematic:
1850 federal census gives age as 59, birth year 1791
1860 federal census gives age as 71, birth year 1789
1870 federal census gives age as 88, birth year 1782

Jeremiah's brother, William W. Bailey, is listed as age 60 on the 1850 federal census which would make his birth year 1790.

I have found no actual record of Jeremi's birth. He became a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Barren County, Kentucky in May 1812. In February 1821 as a result of a dispute with another church member and he "not giving the Church satisfaction, he was put from among us."

If Jeremiah was born about 1791, he would have been 21 when he joined the church. The 1850 and 1860 census records are close to that date. The 1870 census is considerably different. It seems more reasonable that Jeremiah was born about 1791, especially since his brother was born about 1790.

442 BIRTH: !Birth (1871) and death dates from cemetery inventory and photo of tombstone taken Aug 2000. Note this birth year conflicts with census data from 1880 Federal census Miller Co., MO which gives Robert's age as 5 years. If his birth month is November, he will have turned 6 in November 1880 making his birth year 1874. 1920 Federal census lists Robert's age as 46, giving a birth year of 1873. It seems more likely that the earlier census is correct and Robert was born November1874. 1900 Federal Census Miller Co., MO agrees with this, listing month as November, year as 1874, and age as 25. Robert E. Bailey

444 Living with brother William T. Bailey in Barren Co., KY on 1850 and 1860 Federal Census. Husband, James Lloyd, is apparently deceased. Susan America Bailey

445 There is no firm evidence as to the date of Susan Samantha's birth. On the 1850 census, she is listed as age 32, giving a birth year of 1818. And on the 1860 Miller Co. census her age is given as 40, making her birth year 1820. In 1870, the census says she is age 56, birth year 1814. However, on the 1880 Miller Co. census where she is listed as James Greenwood's mother-in-law, she is age 68, making her birth year 1812. Two of the ages given on the census records would have her age at marriage far too young -- if born 1820, age at marriage in 1830 would be 10; if born 1818, age at marriage would be 12. Since Julius Bailey, her father, consented to her marriage, Samantha was probably under 18 in 1830. Samantha seems to be aging rather slowly, but maybe by 1880 she is closer to her true age, which would give a birth year of 1812.

446 DEATH:! Died after Probate of his mother's will, filed 12 Apr 1870, Miller Co., MO, since he is listed as one of the heirs; and before 1880 Federal census, since Mary is listed as Widow on Saline Twp, Miller Co., census. Tarlton Bailey

447 Tarleton married Malinda Wheeler December 12, 1816 in Albemarle County, VA. Frances (Fanny) Bailey Wheeler Malinda's mother consented for Malinda. Witnesses were Parks Bailey, William Bailey and Benjamin Porter husband of Salley Bailey. On October 5, 1822 Parks married Frances Wheeler widow of Robert Wheeler.
Tarleton and Malinda had at least six kids one being Jobe C. b. May 7 1831 and one being Malinda b.1842. They once lived in Albemarle County but moved to Lee County sometime before Jobe was born.
Tarleton served in the War of 1812, his service was from July 27, 1814 to December 10, 1814. He served under Captain William Wood, Light Infantry, Yancey Regiment, out of Camp Holly Springs 24 miles Richmond VA.
Presumably Malinda died in 1838 because the 1840 census show the family in Lee county with 4 male children, 2 female children. The only adult in the household is Tarleton.
April 18, 1841 Tarleton married Elizabeth Hudson. Elizabeth was born in North Carolina. They lived in Lee County until 1852 then they sold their land and moved to Stewartsville Missouri.
Oder book 6-319 Lee County Virginia Feb. 7th, 1852. Sale between Tarleton Bailey and Elizabeth, his wife, the first part and Zachariah Gibson, Hester Brown, William F. Gibson, Thomas A. Gibson, and Moses M. Gibson of the second part.
In 1860 the family was in Platte county Missouri Preston Township.
The 1870 Census has Tarleton (a farmer) and Elizabeth and 7 kids living in Stewartsville Missouri. Tarleton died October 31, 1874 and was buried in the Lebanon Cemetery founded by the Lebanon Baptist Church. Lebanon cemetery is 4 miles south of Stewartsville in Clinton County Missouri.
